Groenvlei forms part of the Goukamma Nature Reserve that stretches across to the Goukamma River estuary at Buffalo Bay, and all along the coast.  The Goukamma Nature Reserve and the Wilderness National Park offer visitors plenty of bird watching opportunities as well as walks through indigenous fauna and flora. Sedgefield itself, also known as South Africa's "Slow Town", is a lovely seaside village that is surrounded by lakes, sand dunes and indigenous forests, covered in pretty fynbos. It is well known for its pristine beaches, water sports and Wild Oats Community Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings.

Sedgefield falls within the Garden Route National Park (declared the Garden Route Biosphere Reserve in 2018!) which has evolved from a new concept of “conservation without boundaries”.  It offers the potential to protect the whole Garden Route region from damaging exploitation by establishing innovative mechanisms for allowing people with all their associated complex human activities to sustainably interact with this fragile and beautiful nature-oriented environment.  Many people from all walks of life are actively investing in the dream of this unique area becoming the Garden Route Biosphere.

Outdoor activities nearby are plentiful, such as: surfing, deep sea diving, golf, tennis, bowls (latest craze bare feet bowling) paragliding, horse riding, cycling, bird watching & hiking trails.  More information can be found at the Knysna Tourism Office.
